DJ Jeremy Productions – An Introduction!

Hello folks, and welcome to my blog…FYI, here’s a link to back to my main web page (if you’ve landed here via another channel): DJ JEREMY PRODUCTIONS

I’m glad you’ve found your way here, and I’d love to take the opportunity to tell you a bit about my services.

As many of you folks may have ended up here after checking out my Yelp.com reviews, some of this may be redundant, but heck, sometimes redundancy is a good thing.

I DJ all sorts of events, and hold a club residency, but the vast majority of the events I perform at are weddings. I travel the entire San Francisco Bay Area proper, but I’m always willing to travel outside the Bay (travel and lodging charges will apply, depending on where your event is taking place).

I’m certainly not your average wedding DJ…if you’re looking for a tuxedo-clad DJ/ MC who is going to haul your grandmother out to the dance floor to perform the Chicken Dance, or an “interactive” DJ who’s going to crack corny jokes and engage your guests in wedding games/ “icebreakers”, I’d be an absolutely TERRIBLE fit for your wedding. That brand of entertainment just isn’t my game, and if you are the kind of client who is looking for a “Radio Announcer” style wedding emcee, there are LOTS of other DJs out there that would be a much better match for you. For some videos showing the exact type of “interactive” stuff I’m referring to, please follow this link: Videos of what I DON’T do at weddings

To me, a perfect wedding event involves the wedding DJ making as few announcements as possible. I’m happy to do wedding party/ bride-groom introductions if that’s your inclination (although I’m personally not a huge fan of wedding party or family introductions as I feel they tend to impart an “overproduced” feel to a wedding…my opinion would be to stick to a simple bride-groom intro if you want to do intros at all), and make all the pertinent announcements necessary to keep your event flowing, but my ultimate aim is to stay in the background as much as humanly possible. The wedding, IMHO, is all about the folks who are getting married…NOT an obnoxious wedding DJ who wants to hog the limelight.

Personally, I feel that the success or failure of an event (especially the dance portion of an event) rides on the MUSIC, not the emceeing (the less said by your MC, the better!). I believe that hiring someone who can actually mix songs on beat (ie beat-matching – click HERE for a full explanation of this concept), and not a DJ who simply plays unmixed songs through ITunes or an IPod, is the most important choice you can make if you want to have an awesome dance party. Let’s face it – we’ve all been exposed to over 30 years of “DJ culture”, and anyone under the age of 50 is almost certainly familiar with club or radio mix-show style seamless mixing. Why should you settle for less at your wedding? That said, I feel a truly successful event is always built around utilizing a technically skilled (more on this later!) DJ who can work with a client to feel out their taste in music, and then deliver an appropriate selection/ mix for all stages (cocktail hour, dinner and dancing).

If you’d like to hear some examples of how I mix different genres of dance music, feel free to check out my Demo mix page here: DEMO MIXES. You can also download many of my mixes here (if you’d like to throw them on an Ipod or burn them to CD): DEMO MIXES FOR DOWNLOAD

In addition, you can watch the numerous “live in the mix” videos I have posted here: VIDEOS . Note that almost all the videos show one or more LIVE song to song transitions / mixes, and will show you exactly how I mix seamlessly from track to track (note that there are a few mashup videos on bottom of the page as well). I’ve never seen the point of the “produced” promo videos some DJs and DJ companies put together (the ones with little video clips and glamor shots with a BACKING track playing in the background) as they don’t show the DJ in a real time situation – its more like a TV commercial than anything showing you what kind of skill the DJ brings to the table.

*NOTE – When comparing DJs (more on this subject HERE), I STRONGLY suggest asking your potential DJ for a demo mix (or better yet, a LIVE video)!!! If they can’t immediately direct you to one, its a huge red flag that you’ve come across a DJ who likely has little or no mixing skill! Also, when listening to DJ (dance) mixes, take note of the way the DJ transitions between each song…playing the right song for a crowd is always of top importance, but the skill in transition from song to song is almost as important when it comes to maintaining the dance floor “energy” and keeping your guests on the dance floor!

Most importantly, consider how any DJ mix you listen to flows, and ask yourself if you can picture your guests dancing to a similar mix. At the end of the day, that’s pretty much the gold standard in judging a DJ’s skill level! :)

Nowadays, I use a really cool hybrid system called Serato for music playback. It allows me access to all the songs I carry in my hard drive, but the music is controlled through a vinyl emulation system. I still use old school Technics 1200 turntables, but can play any of the songs on my hard drive just like they were actually pressed on the Serato control vinyl records that come with the system. Its amazing how many positive comments I receive from wedding guests regarding the fact that I still play off turntables…I guess the Ipod thing has become so prevalent that coming across a “real” DJ at a wedding is kind of like finding a needle in a haystack.

It’s also worth mentioning that I play (and am familiar with) pretty much every genre of music you can think of – from 1930′s jazz to 40′s big band, and from House to Bollywood / Bhangra, I can cover it all. Unfortunately, I’ve found that some old-school wedding DJs (who of course want your business!) will try to scare clients away from using a DJ like myself by telling clients I might be too “hip” for their guests, and the “club style” DJs don’t know how to play to a mixed demographic crowd (I address this issue in a few specific blog posts HERE and HERE). In my case, this is about as far from the truth as you can get. Take a listen to the wide variety of mixes I have on offer and I’m sure you’ll see my versatility! :)

In any case, I hope that this post provides you with a decent picture of what I’m all about. Please feel free to shoot me an e-mail (jeremy@djjeremyproductions.com) or give me a ring (510-390-2233) if you have any questions.

Talk to you soon,

DJ Jeremy
