I’ve noticed many mobile DJ services tout that they use the Bose L1 compact systems at their events as a big selling point – the ones in the above photo that look like skinny sticks rather than conventional speakers. However, these systems really aren’t made for DJ use, and in my opinion, shouldn’t be used for an event where dance music is played.
In their defense, these Bose “sticks” as they call them are light and easy to set up – the whole unit only weighs 29 lbs, vs a QSC K12 main speaker (our standard main speaker nowadays, though we often combine these speakers with powerful 18″ QSC, JBL or Mackie sub-woofers for extended bass) that weighs in at 41 lbs per unit. They also sound great at lower volumes appropriate to background music. I’ve had the opportunity to try out a higher end installed Bose Panaray MA12 (which is very similar to the L1s, though of higher quality and output – they have two of these pre-installed at the Corinthian Yacht Club in Tiburon, CA along with added Bose sub-woofer modules – this system sounded AWESOME during dinner, but was pretty terrible at higher volume once dancing started!) and have heard these compacts used by live musicians many times – my verdict: I think they are great for ceremony musicians, or for any musician playing background music at a small event…
However, for DJ event use, these speakers have some serious issues – I was going to post more extensively on this subject, but the following article I came across pretty much says it as well as I could – please click the tab and take a read: CLICK HERE FOR ARTICLE
As noted in the above article, EVEN BOSE ITSELF DOES NOT RECOMMEND THESE SYSTEMS FOR DJ USE, not even for use at “small” venues! You can check it out for yourself here – simply pick the “DJ Events” option, and you will note Bose only recommends their 402 or 802 systems (which are conventional speakers) NOT the Compact L1 system (or any of the more expensive Compact stick systems either!): BOSE “SELECT YOUR SYSTEM”
That being said, any DJ that uses the Bose Compact system for more than wedding ceremony coverage is actually going against the advice of the manufacturer. Given that most companies overstate, rather than understate the versatility of their products, its safe to say using Bose Compact systems for DJ dance events is clearly NOT the way to go. If you hear any DJ touting this “amazing” system as a selling point, you’ve been warned!
