3. COMPARING POTENTIAL DJS – ALL DJS ARE NOT THE SAME PRODUCT
PS – Many potential clients want to make sure we can play standard 50s-60s-70s-80s-90s music at their events. Of course we can!!! While some of the blog content found here is NOT intended to be wedding (or corporate event) related, almost ALL the mobile events we handle involve playing music aimed at appealing to a wide range of ages and backgrounds. While we do offer some off the beaten path mixes on this blog (Bollywood / Bhangra, house, electro, obscure disco and funk), this is not what we would generally play at events – unless requested of course!
On that note, please feel free to have a look at the following blog posts which highlight some of our wedding DJ mixes aimed at a mixed age / mixed demographic crowd, and how we play for such events. While we CAN skillfully mix music many wedding DJs have never heard of (house, electro, dubstep etc), we play all the crowd-pleasing favorites as well:
1. FLOOD MANSION WEDDING MIX
2. PLAYING TO A MIXED DEMOGRAPHIC CROWD, PART 1
3. PLAYING TO A MIXED DEMOGRAPHIC CROWD, PART 2
4. MIXED AGE, MAINSTREAM LIVE WEDDING MIX FROM THE BRAZILIAN ROOM
DJ Jeremy Indian (Bollywood) – American hybrid live wedding mix…
Here’s a live recording from the wedding I handled on 11-12-11. This mix is representative of a mix I would put together for either an Americanized Indian wedding, or like this particular wedding, one where only one side of the wedding is Indian. Basically, I flip back and forth between Bollywood tunes and American ones in order to keep everyone happy. If you are planning a similar wedding, this mix will give you a snapshot of how I handle such events. ![]()

Mainstream, mixed age range DJ Jeremy wedding mix…live from the Brazilian Room.
Here’s a mix I recorded live at the Brazilian Room in Berkeley on 10-9-11. This one was made up largely of client requests (as to avoid setting off anyone’s “cheese” alarm, I would not play songs like “Dancing Queen” unless requested by my clients – in this case, my client did request that particular tune plus a few other songs of a similar nature which are included in the mix), and was aimed at a mixed age crowd – half 60 somethings, and half twenty and thirty year old guests. Essentially, this is a dance set aimed at pleasing everyone in attendance, regardless of age range. This is a surely a more conservative mix than some of my others, but is a good representation of a crowd pleasing mix of very mainstream, accessible music. While a vast majority of this mix is beat-matched, its worth noting that I did drop a few songs in without mixing them – I was trying to get a LOT of requests into a short 1 hour set, and didn’t have the time to work the tempo up or down seamlessly in a few spots.
In any case, some of my potential clients are worried that a mix-style DJ can’t play this style of music, and of course, that simply isn’t true. Take a listen and I’m sure you will agree.

Oktoberfest at the Bently…
Here’s a little video from the massive 800+ guest corporate affair we recently handled over at San Francisco’s Bently Reserve. We set up a large 8 QSC K12 speaker array to spread sound throughout the Banking Hall, and even with a packed room, the audio sounded fantastic (and could be kept at a volume conducive to holding a conversation).
The Banking Hall at the Bently is a very popular wedding venue as well, but as a room with really poor acoustics (the room is loud, but echoes badly due to all the reflective surfaces and can sound muddy), I will generally advise clients (who have the budget to do so) to go with a 4 or 6 speaker array (short of erecting a stage and going with an impractically expensive line array system, this is the best option), with speakers located on both sides of the space.
For background music, and for speeches / toasts, a standard 2 speaker “wedding DJ” setup just isn’t optimal in the Banking Hall space. It may seem counter-intuitive to use MORE speakers in an attempt to keep the volume LOWER (and thus reduce the echo effect), but multiple speakers spread throughout the space really makes a huge difference in a space like that that was not initially designed for event use.
In any case, the Bently is a beautiful venue, and if you are booking there, its surely worth considering adding a bit to the budget to optimize the sound as much as possible.

Jackson Hole and Tahoe photos…
This summer, I’ve had the opportunity to DJ weddings in two really awesome high elevation locations, Jackson Hole, WY and Tahoe / Truckee, CA. The wedding in Jackson Hole took place at 9,200 feet at Couloir (Jackson Hole Mountain Resort) located atop the Grand Tetons (cool side-note: all the guests and vendors came up on a gondola from the main resort), and the one in Tahoe took place at the Ritz Carlton (Northstar). Here are a few pics from the events at both locations.

Bose Compact Systems for DJ use? I think not…
I’ve noticed many mobile DJ services tout that they use the Bose L1 compact systems at their events as a big selling point – the ones in the above photo that look like skinny sticks rather than conventional speakers. However, these systems really aren’t made for DJ use, and in my opinion, shouldn’t be used for an event where dance music is played.
In their defense, these Bose “sticks” as they call them are light and easy to set up – the whole unit only weighs 29 lbs, vs a QSC K12 main speaker (our standard main speaker nowadays, though we often combine these speakers with powerful 18″ QSC, JBL or Mackie sub-woofers for extended bass) that weighs in at 41 lbs per unit. They also sound great at lower volumes appropriate to background music. I’ve had the opportunity to try out a higher end installed Bose Panaray MA12 (which is very similar to the L1s, though of higher quality and output – they have two of these pre-installed at the Corinthian Yacht Club in Tiburon, CA along with added Bose sub-woofer modules – this system sounded AWESOME during dinner, but was pretty terrible at higher volume once dancing started!) and have heard these compacts used by live musicians many times – my verdict: I think they are great for ceremony musicians, or for any musician playing background music at a small event…
However, for DJ event use, these speakers have some serious issues – I was going to post more extensively on this subject, but the following article I came across pretty much says it as well as I could – please click the tab and take a read: CLICK HERE FOR ARTICLE
As noted in the above article, EVEN BOSE ITSELF DOES NOT RECOMMEND THESE SYSTEMS FOR DJ USE, not even for use at “small” venues! You can check it out for yourself here – simply pick the “DJ Events” option, and you will note Bose only recommends their 402 or 802 systems (which are conventional speakers) NOT the Compact L1 system (or any of the more expensive Compact stick systems either!): BOSE “SELECT YOUR SYSTEM”
That being said, any DJ that uses the Bose Compact system for more than wedding ceremony coverage is actually going against the advice of the manufacturer. Given that most companies overstate, rather than understate the versatility of their products, its safe to say using Bose Compact systems for DJ dance events is clearly NOT the way to go. If you hear any DJ touting this “amazing” system as a selling point, you’ve been warned!
New DJ Jeremy Disco Mix….
Here’s a disco mix flavored with the mid-to-late 70′s “porno” soundtrack club sound that had evolved from earlier disco music, with some notable Cerrone tracks contained within. For those unfamiliar with Cerrone (probably best know for his monster disco track “Supernature”), he was kind of the 70s precursor to current (and very popular) French house / electro producers David Guetta and Bob Sinclar – basically, he was the iconic French disco producer of his time.
Anyways, here’s another historic window into the evolution of dance club music over the years. Enjoy!

Cool Same Day Edit from a 7/16 wedding I handled up in Jackson Hole, WY…
I thought this was a cool video (created by Elysium – Julie Hill did the editing work on this one), and figured I’d share. There’s a bit of background on the wedding over on Green Wedding Shoes as well: A PIXEL COWBOY WEDDING – BRITTANY & DAVE
PS – DJ Jeremy cameo occurs at 3:26-3:30.
